Iida's cat guardian deity, “I-Nyamaru.” I-Nyamaru was born long ago in a corner of Iida Castle. After beloved local residents told him, “Please watch over Iida forever,” he became a cat-mata, a local yokai. Before long, he was loved as a guardian deity who drove away mice, and during the era when sericulture flourished, he became a cat deity protecting the precious silkworms. Today, he works hard every day to share Iida's appeal throughout Japan. Born in Iida (Ina Valley), he was named “I-Nyamaru” after his praise-loving catchphrase “I-nya🐾” (👍). His favorite things are apples and the people of Iida. He dislikes the harsh winters of the Ina Valley. Today too, he is working hard to share Iida's appeal throughout Japan! Mice were a major enemy when raising silkworms. People revered cats that protected silkworms from mice as guardian deities, and eventually they became objects of worship.
