The association solicited character designs to promote Sumita Town from across the country, selected 10 designs from the submissions, and Sumikko was chosen and created through a vote by elementary and junior high school students in the town. Apparently modeled on charcoal, Sumikko participates in events while sharing the town's attractions and information on Facebook to promote Sumita Town, which aims to become Japan's leading town for forests and forestry.
