Long ago, the moat of Hiroshima Castle (Carp Castle) was connected to the Ōta River, and carp could freely travel between the river and the moat. Then one day, the moat and river were suddenly separated, and the carp were parted from one another. Even now, many carp gather at the outlet of the waterway beside Sorazaya Bridge, longing to return to the castle. The united yearning of these homesick carp gave birth to the yōkai Koisshi.
