Hokkaido local character Marimokkori was created in 2005 with the marimo of Lake Akan in Hokkaido as its motif. At first, merchandise sales were apparently refused by souvenir shops and others because of its “appearance,” but its popularity later grew, and it went on to serve as a PR character for Hokkaido products, with its popularity continuing!
