Hara Village, Nagano Prefecture, lies at an elevation of 900–1,400 m on the western foothills of the Yatsugatake Mountains, where highland vegetables are widely grown. It is especially Japan's leading producer of celery. The village has about 60 pensions and is popular as a summer retreat. Serorin works hard toward becoming “Japan's most energetic village.”
