The Kawabata-kun Family was created in 2012 from entries submitted nationwide to promote the protection of the kawabata moroko, a freshwater fish endemic to Japan in the carp family whose extinction is threatened in various areas, as well as the protection of the natural environment. Kawabata-kun and Moroko-chan originally worked as a married pair and environmental conservation ambassadors for the city, but after children were born, the whole family now works together as the Kawabata-kun Family.
