Ofunaton is Ofunato City's mascot character. Created in February 2013 as the PR character of the Galactic Federation Sanriku Ofunato Republic “to recover from the damage caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake” (among other theories), Ofunaton is based on a daruma and a pig. He apparently has the special ability to distinguish the smell of delicious grilled saury from far away, and a rare golden saury that is occasionally landed is depicted on his belly.
