Tanto-kun was born in 1993 as the king of the fruit kingdom in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan's leading cherry-producing prefecture. He wears Sato Nishiki cherries on his chest and carries an apple staff that only the king is permitted to possess. He usually spends his time in the palace, but appears at cherry-related events to promote Higashine City and Yamagata Prefecture as a fruit kingdom.
