Oyabe City symbolic characters, Mergyu-kun and Mermomo-chan. These two characters are lovers, created in the image of the fiery oxen from the Battle of Kurikara between the Genji and Heike clans. Born in 1999, Mergyu-kun has a pattern on his belly depicting the many fairy-tale buildings in the city. Born in 2002, Mermomo-chan has a heart pattern on her belly inspired by Heart Island at Crossland Oyabe, known as a sacred place for lovers.
