Affiliation: Saitama Prefecture. Saitama Prefecture's mascot Kobaton was created in 2000, based on the Java sparrow, the prefectural bird, from a design by a high school student in the prefecture. Since then, Kobaton has been very popular wherever it goes. Kobaton even went into space with Koichi Wakata, an astronaut from Saitama Prefecture.
