In the Heian period, the area prospered as a port town and became known as a settlement of lumber workers. The place name Daimotsu came to mean giant timber, which is why Daimotsu-kun’s topknot is made of wood. His face is modeled on Ushiwakamaru, based on the historical fact that Minamoto no Yoshitsune set sail from Daimotsu Beach.
