Mōkichi-kun, Ōshima Village’s mascot character, was created in 2014 “to save” the island of Matoyama Ōshima from population decline. Since the island is a production area for branded beef from various places, Mōkichi-kun is modeled on a cow and features wind turbines, of which there are 16 on the island. Because agriculture and fishing also flourish there, Mōkichi-kun holds a sea bream and rice ears in his hands. Mōkichi-kun works hard on public-relations activities so people throughout Japan will learn about Ōshima Village’s appeal.
