Gonkichi-kun is the image character for the fairy tales of Nankichi Niimi. In preparation for 2013, the 100th anniversary of the birth of Nankichi Niimi, a children's-literature writer who created works such as Gon, the Little Fox, an image character was solicited to help more people learn about Niimi's fairy tales. Gonkichi-kun was selected from more than 1,000 entries submitted nationwide. He is a boy who serves as a guide to Niimi's fairy tales and wears red gloves after the story Buying Mittens.
