Misonobashi 801 Shopping District character. Yaoi-chan was created from local specialty Kamo eggplant, designed by an art university student at the time. Her name was selected by visitors to a festival after a public competition and she was named 801-chan (Yaoi-chan). Apparently it took time for everyone to accept her after her creation, but she became popular by serving as the model for an anime, having a DVD produced, and appearing in television commercials. She appears mainly at events in Kansai and works to revitalize Misonobashi 801 Shopping District.
