Akita Prefecture mascot Sugicchi debuted as the character of the Akita Wakasugi National Sports Festival, with Akita cedar as his motif. He later became a prefectural employee and has promoted the prefecture and supported the energy of its residents. In 2008, he became a chief, and has appeared on television as a representative of Akita Prefecture, among other activities.
