Uto-chan and Utoko-chan were created by combining the ox and tiger, the guardian deities of Fukuman Kokuzo Bosatsu Enzoji Temple in Aizu-Yanaizu Town, Fukushima Prefecture. Both are somewhat gentle in personality, but they love interacting with everyone and welcome visitors at Yanaizu Town’s various tourist attractions and events. They love Aizu-Yanaizu’s specialty awamanju and eat as many as 113 awamanju in one day. Their red faces make them akabeko because Yanaizu Town is said to be the birthplace of akabeko. They are also, in fact, lovers.
