There was a time when the area around Minami Ward, Sapporo (Kawazoe, Kitanosawa, Nakanosawa, and Minamisawa) was called “Hattaribetsu.” In particular, Minamisawa was the place where lavender for fragrance was first cultivated and produced in Japan. Monamin was selected in 2014 through a design competition held by the Monan Shopping District Promotion Association and Tokai University Affiliated Fourth High School (now Tokai University Affiliated Sapporo High School), and the initial design was unveiled. After ten years, local citizens and businesses made the character even more familiar to everyone in Sapporo’s Minami Ward through an illustration renewal, a mascot costume, and the release of a theme song (see YouTube). Please continue to support Monamin, rooted in the local community! Place of origin: Under dead leaves. Home: Around Mount Moiwa and Hattaribetsu. Favorite: Lavender. Species: Fairy. Height: 10 cm. Weight: 15 kg.
