Gunkanjima character Gansho-kun of Gunkanjima. This character was unveiled in 2017 to promote Gunkanjima, a World Heritage site in Nagasaki Prefecture that flourished as an undersea coal mine from the Meiji to Showa periods. Its motif is the island’s rocky reef, and it wears a hat inspired by the buildings standing on the island. While updating Twitter, Gansho-kun welcomes and sees off visitors going on Gunkanjima tours. Various goods, including T-shirts and sweets, have also been produced, attracting attention.
