Kurikaba was created in 2012 to promote the anti-bag-snatching cover and encourage everyone to learn about and use it. He represents a hippo wearing a chestnut hat, combining kuri (chestnut, as in hittakuri, bag snatching), bōshi (prevention), and kaba (hippo, as in kabā, cover). He appears at events mainly in Kyoto and the Kansai area and works hard on promotion.
